About
History
MB Century has a long and impressive history, dating back to 1950 when it started operations as a government department. Today, drawing on its long history and accumulated expertise, the business is proudly known as New Zealand’s only world-class, end-to-end service, energy solutions provider.
Ownership
MB Century started life as the Ministry of Works and Development and operated from 1950-1987. From 1987-1996 the company traded as Works Geothermal Ltd, a fully owned NZ Government department responsible for all power development.
During 1996-1999, Downers Energy Services Ltd acquired the company, and from June 1999, operated as Century Drilling & Energy Services (NZ) Ltd, trading as Century Resources.
In 2010 MB Holdings (Oman) purchased Century Resources from Downer EDI and traded as MB Century.
Finally, in 2015, Tuaropaki Trust purchased MB Century from MB Holdings to form New Zealand’s leading total-solution energy service provider.

Pono
Pono is about doing the right thing, at the right time, for the right reason.
We are committed to being honest, open and straightforward. This makes us reliable and dependable. We want to have a reputation as being, ‘the team that just gets the job done’. It all comes down to trust and respect; for each other and everyone that we have contact with. Pono is about doing the right thing, at the right time, for the right reasons.
We conduct business in good faith by respecting the needs of others, keeping our word and acting with transparency.
Aroha
Aroha is reflecting ways people relate to one another, including with respect, empathy, hospitality, generosity, and connections.
We believe that understanding, acceptance and support are the pillars of great relationships. From understanding comes empathy – the ability to walk in the shoes of others. Acceptance means embracing diversity and acknowledging each other’s uniqueness. And support means being in each other’s corner.
We create a rewarding workplace that values everyone, encourages professional development, recognises good performance and provides equal opportunities.
Kaitiakitanga
Acting as a guardian of the environment.
The physical environment is sacred. Kaitiakitanga expresses the responsibility we have to do everything in our power to protect it. To achieve this we hold ourselves accountable, collaborate with our business partners and fully engage with mana whenua.
We work every day to demonstrate our respect for the environment by changing our activities and practices to ensure they impact positively on waterways, air and whenua.
Growth Sustainability Model
We are part of the Tuaropaki group, which owns and operates a geothermal power station, 11 hectares of geothermally heated glass houses, a milk powder factory producing products using geothermal heat. The group has also recently built New Zealand's first green hydrogen plant. MB Century's rig, drilling geothermal wells, makes a vital contribution to the group's mission to help New Zealand's energy sector achieve a low carbon future.
While we know we can do better; we are pleased to report we are gaining some real sustainability momentum. For example, we heat our workshops using geothermal energy and our electricity is supplied by a company that trade the group's electricity from its renewable power plant. In addition, we recycle and have started a community impact group to explore employee and community initiatives, sponsorships, and volunteering opportunities. The next step for MB Century is to investigate the use of electric and hydrogen-fuelled vehicles for our fleet.
