Moawhango Outfall Valve Refurbishment

Project:

This project had three steps: disassembly, refurbishment, and reassembly. We disassembled the valve into 3 pieces, modernised the sliding strips, and repainted each component of the valve before finally reassembling. On site, we also refurbished drainage valves, painted all of the embedded pipework, replaced hydraulic systems, and designed new platforms for safer access to the valve all year round. The Venturi section was successfully removed and transported to our facilities for refurbishment before reinstalling.

Objective:

To maintain and improve the entire system, enabling it to reliably function for another 25 years with minimal interference and downtime. This project is part of a greater program of works, to ensure an extended life cycle for the Tongariro Power Scheme as a whole.

MB Century’s Role:

This project was time-critical due to the large percentage of waterflow in the Tongariro Scheme being funneled through this unit. It is also located in a remote, semi-alpine environment with significant access and environmental challenges, but thanks to our team and their inter-departmental coordination and determination, the commissioning was completed on time. We commend our fabrication team specifically for their ability to collaborate seamlessly with engineering, minimizing any impact on the schedule while replacing the valve.

Project Outcomes:

Modernised infrastructure, improved valve functionality, high quality painting of embedded pipework, refurbished drainage valves, and implementation of new infrastructure for safer working conditions. All outcomes were delivered on time and to standard within a scheduled outage.

The Moawhango Valve was last refurbished 40 years ago and will now continue to operate until its next maintenance period in 40 years’ time. Overall, this has modernised the site allowing better autonomous control for the client and longevity of use; a huge success for Genesis and MB Century.
